Some Issues of Interest to Me
Restructure the Nevada State Legislature
- All sessions of the Legislature would be on cable
TV, just like city or county meetings. Residents could
then see for themselves how Nevada bills are
investigated.
- No state legislator would be allowed to be employees
of any city, county or state government agency.
- No lobbyist would be allowed personal meetings with
their Nevada legislator without a lobbyist with a
conflicting opinion at the same meeting.
- No money would be allowed to be spent by any city,
county or state government agency to lobby State of
Nevada legislators.
- The position of a state legislator should be a
part-time position that meets between 5 and 7 days a
month instead of 120 days in a row every 2 years. This
would give more time for research on bills to be voted
on. Each legislator would have their own part-time
research assistant instead of the current secretary that
just takes messages and sets appointments.
- The capitol of Nevada should be moved from Carson
City to Las Vegas to save on transportation costs.
Investigate/Restructure CCSD Budget and Programs
- A large number of highly paid supervisors should be
let go and the school principals should be the primary
supervisors of the teachers as they already are.
- There should be an independent audit of the school
district's spending and it should be public information.
The audit's focus should be on methods to decrease
spending.
- There should be a public investigation into the
methods of teaching our children with the focus on new,
more productive teaching methods.
- The construction budget should be investigated to
find ways of building schools in a less costly manner. I
think that large developments should build the school
and give it to CCSD. Currently, developers profit from
the land to the school district.
- We should break up the School District into groups
small enough that will facilitate implementing ideas
from teachers and parents to help our children.
Increase Attorney/Judge Accountability
- Filing official complaints about your attorney
and/or judge should be taken seriously.
- I would push for a citizens review board for judges
ad attorneys.
Restructure Family Court
- Representing yourself in family court should be
preferred and encouraged by a self-help department that
has attorneys on staff to help you handle your case for
a fee.
- Joint physical custody should be the preferred
method of custody arrangements in Nevada. Child support
should be adjusted by time spent with each parent. It is
done in other states and can be done here.
- We should overturn "Osborn v. Wright." This is a
Nevada Supreme Court decision that states, in joint
physical custody arrangements, whichever party makes
more money pays the other child support regardless of
time spent with the child(ren). Nevada state law states
there should be no sexual bias.
- There should be a way to complain about your judge
or attorney that is taken seriously. Currently, the
system takes your complaints and files them away without
any research and informs you that there was no problem.
- Child support laws should be enforced more strictly.
At present, child support orders that are not followed
are handled in a very lax manner. The law states that
you go to jail for not paying your support or levy your
assets or income.
Restructure CPA Board
- Non-CPA bookkeepers should be given a legal right to
use a special title to do the work they do.
- There should be methods to gain experience enough to
become a CPA alternative to interning with a CPA for two
years such as operating a bookkeeping form for a number
of years and then passing the CPA test.
